Website redesign checklist: protect useful search visibility
Plan content, URL redirects, indexability and launch checks before replacing a business website.

Inventory the current website
Export important URLs and identify pages that receive enquiries, organic visits or external links. Save existing titles, descriptions and useful content. Check Search Console and analytics if available so redesign decisions are informed by actual performance.
Map every changed URL
Retain useful URLs when the page purpose stays the same. For changed URLs, document the closest relevant destination and use permanent redirects. Avoid redirecting every removed page to the homepage: it does not preserve the original page's purpose. A genuinely removed page without a replacement may appropriately return 404.
Review staging before launch
Keep staging out of search results while allowing appropriate testing. Check the new navigation, editable content, mobile layouts, forms, metadata and canonical URLs. Confirm that any staging noindex controls will be removed from the production pages that should be indexed.
Verify production responses
After release, inspect status codes, redirect destinations, canonical URLs, robots.txt and the sitemap. Test actual form delivery and analytics. Compare key pages with the saved inventory rather than assuming a successful build means the whole migration is correct.
Monitor after the change
Use Search Console to follow indexing, clicks and query changes. Review qualified enquiries as well as traffic. Search engines need time to process changes, and a careful migration reduces avoidable disruption without guaranteeing unchanged rankings.
