Shopify vs WooCommerce: choosing a store platform

Compare editing, hosting, app costs, payments and maintenance before choosing an e-commerce platform.

Start with operations, not the theme

List your product types, delivery regions, payment needs and inventory workflow before comparing designs. A platform is useful only if the people running the store can maintain it and complete their daily tasks.

Shopify: a managed platform

Shopify provides a hosted store platform. Theme customization commonly uses Liquid, and additional functionality may require apps. Assess subscription costs, app fees, supported payment options and plan-dependent capabilities. A managed platform reduces some infrastructure work, but does not remove catalog, content and integration responsibilities.

WooCommerce: WordPress flexibility

WooCommerce is a WordPress commerce platform. It can suit businesses that want store functionality alongside substantial website content or more control over hosting. That flexibility comes with responsibility for hosting capacity, compatible extensions, updates, backups and security. Compare the ongoing operational costs, not just the initial software license.

Compare a realistic total cost

For each option, record development, theme or extension licenses, hosting or platform fees, maintenance and payment processing. Confirm provider availability for the actual business entity and selling region. Neither platform automatically makes a business eligible for a particular payment provider.

Test the everyday workflow

Before committing, try adding a product with variants, organizing collections or categories, changing stock and handling a sample order. Check the mobile product and checkout experience. Choose the platform whose limitations and responsibilities you can comfortably operate within.
